    Don't know.

It just now happened again. I get to a desktop with wallpaper, but no icons or Windows taskbar. I am able to right click on the desktop and get the usual menu. I don't see anything to force the taskbar to re-appear.
So you tried running a new task in Task Manager, like I said?
Have you installed any program that 'hacks' the dll to change its appearance, such as LiteStep?
I have used LiteStep before, and i have had problems with it before : help! installed program and things have gone wrong - Vista Forums
otherwise it could be a graphics problem, which is out of my knowledge to a certain extent.

If it is an error, perhaps a Repair Install will fix it.

    Found this fix..

    The fix:

    • Download the driver from the ASUS website here.
    • In the three dropdown menus, select: Graphic Card, NVIDIA SERIES, ENGT220 Series
    • In the popup menu select Windows 7 64bit
    • Expand the VGA menu
    • Select version 190.45. Do not get the latest version.
    • Click on "Global" (not Global (DLM)) to download directly without the download manager.

    Hope this helps

Try opening a command prompt, and type in "SFC /scannow" without quotes.

Maybe you've got corrupt system files.

    SOLVED!

For the last two days the problem has not recurred. The solution seems to have be downloading and installing new chipset drivers from ASUS (the pc mfr).

I hope I'm not knocking on wood prematurely.

instead of rebooting, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and choose Task Manager. under the applications tab, click on 'New Task...'. type in explorer.exe and press enter. does the taskbar come back up? ,

this same problem you are having happens to my old Sony pc all the time, its an XP, however the solution mentioned above should actually solve the problem for Windows 7 and all versions of Windows as well after XP
