How to check IDE or AHCI mode?

I have a Sony Vaio and would like to check if it's in IDE or AHCI mode. I entered the Bios but nothing is mentioned in there except some simple settings. My question is how do I establish my laptop is running in which mode and how do I switch between the modes since the Bios don't offer any options? Thanks for reading.

Research your motherboard. Google to find the mobo for your computer model, then look on its Support Downloads page for drivers. It will show AHCI drivers if that mode is supportable, or IDE. It may even need a BIOS update to enable more modern AHCI.

You can read the manual to determine for sure. These resources are available on the web for almost every motherboard in existence.

Others will help you with this research, and may already know your mobo, if you fill in your system specs in the bottom left hand corner of your post.

I had NOTHING but problems when I tried switching to AHCI! I wanted to, and my Abit IP-35 PRO supports it, but it really seemed to screw things up, and also prevented me from getting back into the BIOS - had to reset it (fortunately the IP-35 PRO had a nice handy external switch to do the reset with).

I may post on the Abit forums about it, just haven't gotten around to it.
