    New motherboard + Win7 MSDN

Hey guys, back in August I got a copy of Windows 7 Pro from my professor for free and I've been using it ever since without any issues.

I've decided its time to do a major upgrade to my system and I am going to be getting a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM.

I understand I have to reformat the Hard Drive when getting a new motherboard into my system... My question is: Can I use the SAME windows 7 key / disk that I was given by my professor on my NEW motherboard?

Thanks a ton for any help :)

Hello CBrz, and welcome to Seven Forums.

As long as it is not a OEM Windows 7 Pro version, then you should have no problem using the same key number with the new motherboard after reinstalling. If you do have problem with activation and it's not a OEM version, then you would just need to do a phone activation instead of the normal online activation. :)

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Yes you can as long as it is not what is known as an OEM edition. That can only stay on one computer. If you have an upgrade or full retail you can. You may have to talk to a tech to put an upgrade on a comp with new cpu ram and mb

    Good Luck

Thanks a ton for the welcome and the quick response. I'm not sure if the copy I got WAS OEM... All I know is I was given a download link from the website, I burned it to a CD and then used the key given to me by the prof... How can I tell if it is / isn't?
