Always getting "The file name is not valid"

I just upgraded my Windows Vista 64x to Windows 7 Ultimate 64x.

Everything went smoothly. I installed all the programs I use but I now receive "The file name is not valid" error when ever I try to save something. Whether it is a notepad file I am trying to save or an image in PhotoShop I always get "The file name is not valid".

I did run some secuirty software including IObit Secuirty 360, Glary Utilities, Advanced System Care, and a few others so I am not sure if they altered the system files or not. I used them before on Windows Vista and I never had this problem before.

Please help.

In that Clean Install Manual I think I did option two because I also had a "Windows.old" folder but deleted it.

This looks like your prob, when you re-installed Vista from factory you removed all the assocations with the progams you are haveing trouble with. I think you will have to reassociate the programs.

That's some random bunch of advice without even trying to find the cause...

Where exactly are you trying to save the file?
What is the path that's having problems? (paste an example)
Does it happen anywhere?
Is it ALL programs or just the two mentioned?

Unfortuantely you have installed a crapload of "security" programs and they all do lowlevel system stuff and probably have not been vetted for W7. In the end a reinstall might be necessary, but maybe it's something to do with how/where your trying to save a file...

I am trying to save the files onto my desktop, but it won't work anywhere else either.
It happens to anything I try to save. Including files, images, audio files, etc.
This problem occurs in all programs.

This sounds like an ownership/permissions/credentials error, but I'm not sure how to fix it.

I think it possible that the "filename" that is not valid is not the name of the file itself, but rather it's the UUID string of either the user or of the owner linked to that file. The file system checks that to ensure that the originator of the request has the proper permissions to perform the requested file action. Even though you may be using the same user name as you had in Vista (and check that...be sure that the cases are the same) the Windows 7 may have assigned a different UUID string to that user and the difference causes the file system to inhibit the requested operation.

As an experiment you might try disabling UAC completely from Control Panel, but I'm not sure that will address the issue and I don't advocate that as a permanent fix, of course.

Also use MacBookPro (1st gen Intel w/ OS X 10.6) and a second desktop built upon an Intel D975XBX with Intel E6600 multi-booting Ubuntu, SuSE and Fedora Linux and 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium..
The main reason for that error is that the path is VERY long, or there are reserved characters in the path or the name of the file.

If somehow a giant user name was created or a user name with invalid path characters, that path (users desktop and everything under th user path) would not be valid.

Try creating a new folder at c:\Test. Then right click in the folder and create a new text file. Rename it test.txt

Then try opening that, editing it and saving it. If that gives you the same error, then it's possible that one of the programs you installed really did muss up something pretty bad :( Someone recently has a security program compeltely disable cut and paste and it took some time but they found out which one it was...

I also recently installed a trial version of Folder Lock 6, and have been searching for the reason as to why my computer was doing this for a week (not searching too hard, just as I came up with time).

Stumbled upon this, uninstalled the program, and instantly working again.
