User's Desktop - question

I'm coming from Windows XP where we simply had one account and thus a single desktop. Now that we're using Windows 7 we've gone to two user accounts and this brings me to my question. I thought each user would have their own unique desktop; however when I (I'm the administrator) add a program or a shortcut on my desktop it also appears on the desktop of the second user. Is this the way it's supposed to be, and if so, is there a way to keep all my "stuff" from appearing on my wife's desktop as well? Also, when I delete a program shortcut from her desktop, it also removes it from mine? Help please and thank you.

If the programs are installing their shortcuts for all users then it will work like that. Check c:\users\default\desktop, if they are there and you only want them on your desktop move them to c:\users\"your user name"\desktop (where "your user name" is the user name you use.

If they are not in default\desktop you can still cut them from the desktop and paste them in c:\users\"your user name"\desktop (where "your user name" is the user name you use.
