First, "Welcome to the Seven Forums"
Take a ride through the Tutorial Section of the forums; you can usually find just about anything you need in there. It is probably the best data base of information on Win 7 on the Net. Good luck. Here is a link to making a backup of your system (this is found in the tutorial section). | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Pavilion a4302f OS Win 7 Pro x64, VM Win XP, Win7 Pro Sandbox, Kubuntu 11 CPU AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 640 @ 3.0 Gbz Memory 12GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB, 2x2GB Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 4350 HD Graphics/Audio with 512MB Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays 1. I suspect you won't get a great deal of help when there's any possibility that you're perhaps using a clandestine implementation of Windows7, so if you were to announce how you found yourself in this situation it'd help your own cause | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built machine OS W7 x64 CPU Intel Q9300 2.5Ghz Quad LGA775 (Would like Q9650) Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3R (F6 Bios) Memory 4Gb OCZ Gold 1,333Mhz Graphics Card Palit HD4850 O/C Sonic 512Mb DDR3, Dual DViD's Sound Card Azalia to twin Samson 50w Studio Monitors Monitor(s) Displays Twin Dell (E-IPS) U2311H 23.6" Screens Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz Keyboard Cherry PS/2 custom model Mouse Lenovo USB laser "Thinkpad" Mouse PSU OCZ 600w Case Lian-Li PC8 acoustifoamed' aluminium tower Cooling Scythe 140mm Zipang Hard Drives Crucial M4 SSD, archives on twin Western Digital Caviar Black WD2002FAEX, 2TB, 7200rpm HDD's, Samsung Ritemaster CD/DVD Burner... Do you still have the download file (probably an .ISO) that you made from Digital River? That would be your disk. Use a program like MagicISO, PowerISO, UltraISO or Nero to burn that image to disk... | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU AMD Phenom 9600 Quad Core Motherboard ASUS MB-M3A32-MVP Deluxe/WiFi Memory 2 x A-Data 2GB DDR2-800 Graphics Card ASUS ATI Radeon HD 2400PRO Sound Card C-Media 7.1 Surround Monitor(s) Displays Sahara 19" Screen Resolution 1600x1200 Keyboard Mercury Mouse Logitech PSU 800W Case Thermaltake Tai-Chi Cooling Tai-Chi Water Cooler Hard Drives 1 x 80GB Seagate (IDE)

If you were to get a virus (or any other reason) and need to install again, you could take your disk and do that, then type in the same Activation Key. It would not be a problem. You could not do that on a different machine. It has also been reported that if you change a major part of your computer (motherboard), Windows would think it was a new machine and not activate. You would have to call MS, tell them what happened and have them give you a new Activation Key. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build OS Windows 7 Home Premium 32-Bit - Build 7600 SP1 CPU Intel Core i3-2120 3.30Ghz Motherboard Asus P8Z68-V LX Intel Z68 Socket H2 ATX Memory Kingston 4 GB DDR3 1333 mhz Graphics Card Zotac GeForce 9400 GT 512MB Sound Card Sound Blaster Audigy SE 24-Bit Monitor(s) Displays Samsung Sync Master 940 = 19 inch Screen Resolution 1440 X 900 Keyboard Microsoft Natural 4000 Mouse Microsoft Custom Optical 3000 PSU 500 watt Case NZXT Apollo - Silver with Clear Side Panel Cooling Three 120 mm Fans Hard Drives OCZ Vertex 3 120 GB Sata 3 SSD ==

Do these recovery utilities count under that Microsoft product license agreement? I think you already realise that OEM distributions are differently licensed...
You could take the issue up with Hewlett Packard if you wish though...
Retail/upgrade disks have a license agreement which states very clearly that no sales of validation keys alone are permitted by Microsoft, and I know this policy is being rigourously enforced by Microsofts VeRO program on eBay at the moment... | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built machine OS W7 x64 CPU Intel Q9300 2.5Ghz Quad LGA775 (Would like Q9650) Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3R (F6 Bios) Memory 4Gb OCZ Gold 1,333Mhz Graphics Card Palit HD4850 O/C Sonic 512Mb DDR3, Dual DViD's Sound Card Azalia to twin Samson 50w Studio Monitors Monitor(s) Displays Twin Dell (E-IPS) U2311H 23.6" Screens Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz Keyboard Cherry PS/2 custom model Mouse Lenovo USB laser "Thinkpad" Mouse PSU OCZ 600w Case Lian-Li PC8 acoustifoamed' aluminium tower Cooling Scythe 140mm Zipang Hard Drives Crucial M4 SSD, archives on twin Western Digital Caviar Black WD2002FAEX, 2TB, 7200rpm HDD's, Samsung Ritemaster CD/DVD Burner... If you used the Digital River student download then burn the ISO to DVD using ImgBurn at 4x with Verify - never fails. It also makes copies.
If you only downloaded files, then use this to make an ISO to burn to DVD: Make bootable iso from student d/l
The license is retail so it can migrate to whatever machine you want as long as it is only on one machine at a time. Safeguard the key; any Windows 7 installer for your version will work.

Do these recovery utilities count under that Microsoft product license agreement? Absolutely, they will normally auto-activate without user doing anything. They are the same exact factory image which was first activated to the stickered license.
But you're better off shrugging off the factory bloatware by reinstalling using a clean copy of Windows 7 DVD. It also will activate with the stickered license, but requires a call to MS to parse the batch key. You can audit the exact key from your system now using Attachment 44411
If you have the RTM, you can unlock all versions by removing the ei.cfg file in Sources, then recompile using this: Bootable ISO - Create from Installation Files
Then save a Windows 7 backup image externally and you never have to reinstall again. | My System Specs | | how to make a copy of windows 7 ultimate??? problems? All times are GMT -5. The time now is 06:30 AM. | |
