You could try to do a System Restore it should take back to your previous settings for the Windows Update

Assuming that the updates, did in fact, cause the change in your desktop, you must prepare for what will probably happen in the future. If system restore (you could also use a system image, if necessary) is instrumental in restoring your desktop the problem updates would be removed from the system. Shortly, after the return to normalacy, the updates will be reinstalled and you may lose your desktop, again. If it were me, I would change the setting on updates from automatic to manual installation. I would then make a system restore point and a system image. When you receive the updates, install them one at a time. Wait a while before installing the subsequent update, so your computer has time to change the desktop, if it is so inclined. If you install all the updates without incident, great the problem is resolved. If one of the updates changes your desktop again, use the new system restore image, install all of the updates, except the problem one, and leave update setting on manual, until a more permanent solution can be found.

Ah .. McAfee not again .. Try to create a new Windows Profile see whether it work under that profile. If not we could could try to remove McAfee and install Microsoft Security Essentials
