Windows 7: The filename or extension is too long?

My Fix

I had this same problem, but had trouble following the Map Network Drive instructions. Figured I'd register to post how I solved the issue.

I use a program called "Teracopy" for some of my file management. I simply dragged the files that were too long to rename and too long to delete (they were Steam autobackup files that were created when attempting to backup my installed Steam games) into the Teracopy window, then clicked "More", "Delete" and deleted the source files. Worked perfectly after trying to use the command prompt with various commands like "rename", "del", "rmdir", etc.

Linux would probably work too, but this way you can solve the problem natively with software you might already have installed!

Filename extension illusion
The filename below was recieved in a malicious email. It appears to have a .jpg extension but windows will run it as an application. The trick appears to be using left to right then right to left characters so the last 7 characters are "jpg.exe" backwards. I suspect this will dupe a lot of windows...
