i tried some stuff to fix it, but with no success
i don't have or can't find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}\TopViews\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}" that helped people here

I have the same problem, Search only reveals main folders e.g., Programs but does not reveal files within folders. I have also tried the recommended fixes like the Registry Key mentioned but this key does not exist on my computer. Microsoft have provided a 'hotfix' for the problem (Beta) but this did not work either. Would a repair install fix this issue?. I am reluctant to go down this road as everything else is running very smoothly.

If you're using the Start menu Search utility, then open Windows Explorer, click on your C drive, and type the file name in the search box in the upper right of the screen.

Did you try reverting your system to a restore point that predates when the problem started with System Restore?
If not, then make sure to back up all critical data files that were created after the date of the restore point.

It's possible that something got corrupted during the Windows install. Suggest backing up all of your critical data files, and reinstalling Windows.

Check that Indexing Service is enabled (in Control Panel) and also that Windows Programs and Features has 'Windows Search' enabled (tick in box). If necessary disable this and re-boot and then re-enable and re-boot. This worked for me and the 'Search' function is now working.

few hours of testing - my start menu search didn't disply any results until I turned off indexing the "my pictures" folder... maybe because win tried to display search results as "thumbnails"...
