Explorer optical drive default to Open not Play

I'm running W7 build 7077. I've messed around with all the autostart/autoplay settings I can find. But I can't find a way to change my optical drive default in Explorer from Play to Open(as in explore the folders not play the video.)

It's just a nuisance to forget, double click, get the error(because I have WMP disabled in local security policy) then right click on the drive icon and click Open. Life would be easier if I could just double-click it!! Anyone know the secret?

You should be able to configure Windows Explorer to automatically open any media disk(excl. a blank disk obviously) to display its files by selecting "Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer" in Control Panel/AutoPlay.
Just make sure to save any changes you make in AutoPlay, and that "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" is checked.

I'm not sure if I understand your question ... I just click (one click) on the optical drive I want to open and voila, it opens :)

Evidently it's a build 7077 quirk. None of the autoplay autostart settings have any effect. Default is Play and that's that.

Unless there's some other hidden registry setting. Either that or totally remove WMP. Right now I'm just using local security policy to keep WMP from running.
(Aside from this issue I don't want it indexing my drive.)

Hi Miles if you just want to see what's on the cd/dvd, insert the cd as you close the door hold down the shift key, then open explorer/ my computor/ go to the drive letter, click the little arrow to the left and it will open a tree to see what's on the cd. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. To explore the drive all I have to do is right click the icon and click Open. I'm just trying to change it so Open is default. Then I can double-click without thinking about it like every other drive. It's just a minor annoyance but there should be a way to fix it. More than anything I'm curious if there is a fix other than installing a different build of Windows. Seems like there should be a work-around. But with registry stuff it's a mystery wrapped in an enigma or something.
