How to eliminate an icon trail in the taskbar

Hello. I too am new to Windows 7. I have an HP dv6-1350us model laptop. When I use a thumbdrive in the laptop, it leaves a tell-tale icon and entry in the taskbar where one can customize the bottom taskbar. I would rather that this icon and description of the thumdrive not remain there after I remove the thumdrive. Is there any option to stop this entry or any way to remove the entry after the thumbdrive is removed?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Right click on it and you will see an option "Unpin this Program from Taskbar".

If you are referring to the area by the clock, bottom right. Right click on desktop...Personalize... Task bar and start menu, bottom left. Customize notification area.

Thanks for the ideas. I tried all, but to no avail. If I didn't make it clear in my first post, the icon I want to get rid of is in the hidden icons of the taskbar. When I click on that arrow, the icon I want to get rid of is there. Even when I opt to choose to hide the icon, nothing happens. Right clicking does not remove the icon either. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks again.

If I understand now, just left click on the hidden icon marker and then customize.

Right, but the icon I want to eliminate shows up "greyed out". Won't respond to the command to hide it. I would like to eliminate it to not leave a trail of the thumbdrive.

If you right click, then properties, do you get anymore options?

Yes. I can go to the icon notification options, but when I put in the option to hide the icon, nothing happens. I even put the thumbdrive back in and tried all of this.....no luck.
