Windows 7: win7 from USB

Hi All
New here

I have tried and not yet figgured out the usb install, Here is my short story
1) dell 4600 3.0 120gig hd
installed Vista and vista would not reconize cd rom or usb ports
system crashed

I have a 80 get WD 80gig which I installed Windows 7 files all on from USB from wife puter
now at wife computer I access the HD and hit setup Windows 7 install starts.!!

My question is ....Is this installing on the wife computer or the attached HD I installed the files too??

Looks like wife's computer, is it connected via USB? That probably will not work - install off external hard drive - anyway.

Yes via USB. Is there a time in the install it asks here to install too??

hi wmauctions, yes there will be a time when the install will ask where you want to install the OS to. This is when it tell you it'll do the formatting of the drive for you also. If you do not see your wife machine's C:\ and other drives/volume, it's not safe to continue.

You can't install to an external HD. Microsoft will most likely never allow it.
