    Desktop "New Shortcut" Not Working

When I right click on an empty area of the desktop, then click on New, then Shortcut I expect the new shortcut wizard to start but nothing at all happens. I have a few shortcuts I'd like to place on the desktop but without the function working, I'm out of luck. I am able to create a new folder, new text document, etc. on the desktop. It seem like the only "new" function not working is the "shortcut" wizard.

The Win 7 installation is fairly new. I installed it over XP Home using Laplink PCmover® Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant™.

I would appreciate any ideas or help to restore this function/wizard.

    Thank you.

A work around would be to right click on the object you want to place a shortcut to and select Send to then pick Desktop (create shortcut).

Good point, thank you! I'll use that method if need be. The loss of the wizard though still bugs me and I want to get it back. I'm reasonably comfortable working with files, settings, etc. (I'd like to not edit the registry, but would if I had to) so I welcome any fix advice.

Hello Rick, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Using the "New - Shortcut" download in step 9 of the tutorial below may be able to restore this for you so that it will work again.

New Context Menu - Remove & Restore Default Menu Items

    Hope this helps,

    Shawn,

    Outstanding!

When I first clicked on "Restore", it still did not work, so I then "Removed" the shortcut, tested to ensure the entry was removed from the list (it was gone), then used the "Restore" again. It works!

    Thank you very much.

What a relief! Finally a fix....

I have been having this EXACT problem for the last few months. I do not know exactly when it started or what I did to cause it (downloading programs, adding fixes, etc). I did have a few workarounds but I wanted to get the context menu to work again.
After trying many solutions and using various forums, this one FINALLY did the trick! I have verified everything works now. I rebooted my computer several times now and I still have all my shortcuts and I am able to create new ones as well without any problem.
    Thanks so much!!!
