You can actually decide what you would like your laptop to do when you close the lid.

Go to: Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\System Settings and set it the way you would like it!

I am currently on my laptop(which has XP ) so i can't provide any pictures but I believe it depends on what you have your laptop set as. With this XP laptop I have it set to turn the screen off instead of sleeping, which was the default settings. I believe the setting will be under power options > system settings.

Edit: V3xar you beat me to it.
