You need to Take Ownership Shortcut of these folders and files before you can remove them.

this happens to me maybe once every few weeks.... usually if i am moving files/folders to another drive..... sometimes, no particular folder or reason, it still has its "ghost" there... upon trying to delete... cant.... but 99% of time after a reboot, then i can. But taking ownership did nothing for me either... i think this is an explorer "bug", one that is even found in XP at times, like something isnt releasing its grip on the folder placeholder

Do you get any error messages? You could right click/properties/security tab/advanced and check/give yourself all permissions to the items in question. If a folder you should make sure you have apply to sub folders etc. checked although this sometimes does not work. You may need to give yourself permissions to each item inside the folder.

If all those solutions do not work either, you could try and use this. I remember on my external I had 3 files that were once viruses and AVG moved them to the vault. Well once they were moved the files that were left behind were unable to be opened (why would a programmer want his virus to be edited).

So I used that and it came right off. I found it kinda pointless though as I formatted the entire Hard drive later on
