    Windows 7 Fax and Scan

I have recently updated to windows 7 from Vista. I am trying to use windows fax and scan. I have connected everything correctly and have determined that I have a fax modem already inside my computer (conexant D850 56K V.90). However, whenever I try to send a fax, I recieve an error message stating that there is an error configuring the account to contact an administrator. I have no clue as to what this means. I thought that perhaps the driver needed updating but I ran an update check and everything checks out ok. If anyone knows anything about this I would greatly appreciate some advise. My husband sends and receives his work over the fax machine and since our update to windows 7 our fax machine in our all in one will also not work. I have contacted dell, lexmark, and Microsoft with no luck! Thanks

Welcome kdmarcum, This is just a guess, but does your ISP provide that service.
I know the last time I checked with mine (Comcast) they said that was not available at this time.

Some of the representatives I have talked with told me the line needs to be analogue not digital. I have Verizon phone service and I am positive it is analogue. A family member of mine who also uses verizon just set their fax an scan up a couple of days ago....without any problems....I am not sure of the problem. My other thought is that perhaps it has something to do with the upgrade from Vista because they have a new computer which came with windows 7 already installed.

Are you sure that you aren't using VoIP (voice over internet protocol)? A regular fax modem would probably have trouble with that. Here's a plausible-looking discussion, with fixes:

Faxing over VoIP, the correct configuration settings that you need to make.

I've used the fax utility under Win7 exactly twice. My cheap HP/Compaq notebook has a built-in fax modem, and I have analog phone service. I don't recall having to anything clever.

Are the drivers for your fax modem installed?

One alternative is an Internet fax service. There's a link to information in the above article. One downside to that: it's not free.

What does this have to do with the user's ISP?

If you have Verizon FIOS with digital voice, fax is not permitted under your ULA, and wont work.
