Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA CD/DVD Burner - CD / DVD Burners

That is a good cheap one.

Or LGGH22 series, and no they do not have bluebird. As a bonus, they can read scratched discs.

Have you checked the manufacturer's website for new drivers? Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly

Could you recommend a good (cheapish) dual layer burner ?. Are new SATA drive certified for Windows 7 ?

Bought newLG DVD drive today and problem is resolved. I can understand the old LITE ON drive not working but am a little mifed why the HP device will still not work even with WIN 7 drivers. I still find it a little annoying that the MS upgrade advisor stated that I would have no problems with my existing hardware.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have an issue something like this i just noticed.

But the other way around. i burn stuff as a data dvd and works fine, plays fine on my windows 7 but.. Will not play on XP. And that is what the files are for. Its the backups of my XP machine. Its a newer HP as well. With a dvd-rw drive to so.. It's wierd. Not sure whats up. Bout to make a post on it now. Maybe some answer it it will or can also help you maybe on certain points that might be mentioned.

I know this is an old thread, but it's the first result I found when I searched.....
I was having the same issue after I reinstalled windows 7 and I know it's not the drive as I had used it right before I did the reinstall.
I ended up going into device manager and under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers I selected the one connected to the dvd drive and under "Advanced Settings" I unselected "Enable DMA". After that I could insert blank media without the computer locking up.
