    windows explorer associations

I am not sure if this is the place to ask, but I don't see a more appropriate area.

I have installed Win7 build 7057 for about 2-3 weeks now. I have installed just about every program I often use, including Vista Manager 2.0.6. For a while I hesitated on whether to run the registry cleaner, but gave in to my curiosity a few days ago. Everything went fine, until I restarted.

My Windows Explorer would not open up and keeps telling me there are no associations with explorer.exe. I tried undoing the reg cleaning, but there was none. I have also previously switched off my system Restore....

Is there any other way to get this back? It is an annoyance more than anything. My Computer still works. The only thing that is faulty is the Explorer, exe.

    Advise anyone?

    Hi darkmax and welcome,

Try running sfc/scannow . If that doesn't do anything you might want to try doing a repair install

Oh! Thank you very much. I tried the SFC/Scannow command, but it found nothing wrong. I was seriously looking for this repair install the whole time! Guess I should have looked a lot closer at the contents of the tutorials.

I tried the repair install, but it keeps giving me BSOD after it tries to startup for the first time.

Seems I will have to bear with this until I can get my hands on the next build available.

at this point, I suggest you do a System Restore to an earlier time.

Also, do not run registry cleaner again on Windows 7, because Win7 contains many different registry entries which reg cleaner does not recognize and might mess up with you system.

He said he previously turned off system restore Limneos so it's doubtful he has any points before hand. That's one reason not to turn it off, in case something goes wrong. Who knows what extent the damage was done with the reg cleaner. It may just come down to having to clean install again.

Actually the only functionality that I've lost after the registry clean seems to be just the explorer.exe associations. And yet I can still use My Computer and similar functions.... strange. Anyway, the next build should fix it. I'm too lazy to reinstall 7057, it has been very unkind to my nVidia graphic driver, despite the fact that it had always been working fine before. And yes, the driver is beta for Windows 7. It keeps forcing me to revert back to an older driver.

I've finally decided to reinstall clenaly. Its the only way to get the nagging feeling out of my head. 2 1/2 hours to get the OS and all the programs back in order.. Not bad.
