Windows 7: Can't login, Atbroker.exe error

System Restore also fails (starting at the top of the list and going back one by one — none are successful) —*I keep getting the error that System Restore fails with the error code 0x8000ffff.

This is very annoying. I've made sure not to mess with ANYTHING on this computer in the hopes this kinda thing wouldn't happen (as it's my mother's computer). I think it's time to boot in safe mode (which works fine), copy off the files I need, and get her another computer (and not a Windows machine...had enough of this BS)...

....So, I went to check Computer Management -> Services and looked through all services that were stopped. And there it was - The Volume Shadow Copy Service was stopped. I went into the Service Properties and set it to Automatic startup, then tried Backup and Restore again and IT WORKED!!!

This is how my 0x8000FFFF error during Bachup and Restore prosidure was solved. I wish you all success!

Or, "System Restore, Volume Shadow Copy or Windows Backup may return error 0x8000FFFF. Here are some tips to resolve the error and restore functionality.

* Make sure the SYSTEM is the owner of the "System Volume Information" folder located on each drive. The error can be a result of tampering with the security settings of the folder.
* Disable system protection for all drives and reboot. Then re-enable protection.
* Open the Windows Task Scheduler and goto \Microsoft\Windows\SystemRestore. Right click on the task named SR and select RUN.
* Test the fix(s) by creating a Restore Point or running Windows Backup

No go — can't turn on Volume Shadow Copy Service while in Safe Mode, and Safe Mode is the only way I can get into the machine...

Well, I finally was able to Restore, right back to the first available install point. But, it still gives a AtBroker.exe and Explorer.exe error.

Ah well, we've already decided that come next week, there'll be a shiny new iMac on the desk where this POS used to be sitting...

Sorry to here that man, Windows 7 is great OS, at least that's my opinion. Don't give up from it yet, that's my recommendation.

P.S. If you decide to keep it, next time make recovery cd with system image, it's (I think) much safer that way, or backup on external drive.

Well, I'm not "giving up" on it — I've never actually owned a PC (I've been on a Mac since the late 80s and manage more than 30 of them, plus a small farm of Xserves, for a living). My mother thought she'd try a PC a couple years ago "because it was cheaper" — that was Windows XP. She regretted it. But, I said Windows 7 was *way* better (as I also run Windows via Parallels on a few machines) as, well, it is better (than XP). That was 5 months ago. Now, 5 months later, here we sit with the same old Windows BS. Totally locked out of the system, all because of a standard Windows update. So, getting the data off (it's backed up weekly, so just need to get some recent photos off it) and then into the junk heap it goes.

Hi guys i'm new to t he forum. I just want to add what i have experienced as well. Windows 7 is a GREAT!! OS, but it appears this Atbroker.exe application ERROR is a real killer and once you get it. There is nothing you can do about it pretty much, but reinstall. Now hear his the thing that many people are referring to resolving the issue and that that's the CTRL+ALT+END command, but that only works if you are already logged into a Windows OS and your accessing Windows 7 from Remote Desktop.

The issue that the main poster is facing is the same issue I'm having. You start Windows it comes to the load screen. You enter your password and it acts like like its about to load. Then you get ERROR: AtBroker.exe Application error and Explorer.exe Application error.

Doesn't matter is you click "ok" or close it out. You are still doomed to be staring at a "BLACK SCREEN". Nothing seems to work. System restore, desk check, driver restores, or anything. I'm logged into SAFE MODE now and that's how I'm able to post my information on the forum now. These 2 ERRORS that you get before and after you try to log in have to be the worst things you can get on Windows 7. I'm not giving up though. If I find a fix for this I will post it ASAP!!! cause it seems to be a well known problem and Microsoft is not able to fix either. This ERROR was even on vista and you would think they would have came up with some sort of fix for it before releasing Windows 7.
