    Desktop Icons

I restarted my computer as I do every few days. When it booted, the desktop icons were gone. I scanned for a virus and did not have one. No big deal, I could just copy them again I thought. When I click on the Start Button and right click on a program, there is no "create a desktop shortcut". Should there be one? When I try to drag the icon to the desktop, it does not stay. Shouldn't I be able to drag the icon to the desktop? Any ideas?

Right-click on an empty area of your desktop and goto . . . . . . . View--->Show desktop icon (confirm whether this is checked.)

As they say in the Flood Control business, "I'll be dammed". Thanks for your help.
