Upgrade question

I just bought a computer from a guy. He has the windows 7 eval. copy 7100. He has just been put in jail, and does not look like he will be getting out any time soon. What do I need to do to upgrade this copy? I keep seeing that it will expire soon? Could somebody give me some basic info on what to do before I load all of my stuff into this computer. It will not let me even connect to my printer??

Thanks

Welcome!

Sorry to hear that. You will need to buy Windows 7 now. Head to here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/default.aspx

I believe you can get the Upgrade version for about $100.

The you will need to do a clean install with it: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Hope this helps,
~JK

Do I have to stick with the ultimate version? or can I upgrade to a lesser version?

You can upgrade to a lower version. Remember that XP also is a qualifying OS, and there are not as many versions of that.

It is a little confusing. There is an Upgrade feature, but that is not recommended. The upgrade license is what we are referring to.

It is perfectly legal to do a clean install with an upgrade version.

ok thanks for all of your help. I think i am geeting a little better understanding on this whole deal. One more question. Is there a big difference between the three OS options? I do not mind spending the extra 100 if it is worth it, but I am not sure I see any big difference when looking at the chart???

See this: Compare Windows 7 Editions

I think for most people, Home Premium makes the most sense. Personally, I need some features Professional has, like Remote Desktop.

I, and most others just need home premium as Jonathan has said. The other editions cost a lot more for a few extra features. One big feature is bit locker, which very few need. It is encryption.
