But for me it is learning experience of how my system works. And that is not pointless to me; it is knowledge.
I had a lot of fun exactly a year ago during the cold months Vliting the heck out of Win7 to try to see how fast I could make it run on a 528 mb laptop, or at least claw back enough RAM to run Avast.

Even though I ultimately found that there were no service edits that would speed it up any faster than running retail Win7, I learned so much about the services and Windows 7. By the end of the process, I knew they had gotten it as lean as possible and Win7 was the Black Viper.

BTW, I'm still using my old beat up 528mb laptop on surf trips with Home Premium retail, only Defender and one gadget, but normal speeds for web surfing, word processing and watching vids.
That is interesting. And I agree, Windows has really gotten it right - finally. I have the Ultimate edition which was gifted to me by my daughter and son-in-law - both MS employees. I certainly do not need Ultimate; it is way overkill for my purposes. But I'm not complaining!

Anyway, I know there is much in Ultimate that I do not need since I am a single user and not in a corporate type network. That is why I am playing with it. I have not disabled Bitlocker as I may well use that for security purposes. And I have not disabled the services relating to group policy. Though I have not had a need to use group policy, I may use it down the road to tailor my system as I did with XP - particularly to create a limited user account for visitors and to protect my system on my home network. I have grand kids who bring their laptops when they visit... Using group policy I can limit the grand kids' access to my computer yet give my wife and my laptop much more access - or at least I could using XP.

Since I never installed Vista, Seven is a big learning experience for me.

The service in Ultimate which I do Disable is Offline Files, if you don't want it constantly searching for files copied over the Network to synch.
