windows xp & windows 7 questions

ok, been hesitant to ask, hope I can ask it the right way...
I have a desk top that has windows xp
I just bought a lap top with windows 7

I sign in the same way to both accounts on both computers, ( not at the same time ) in other words I have the IE 8. Is this causing me problems???
example on the lap top I can NOT sign in to live instant message, but I do have it on windows xp and it works great. I really like the windows 7, but I can not chat or IM on it.
it says I am off line & will not let the download connect?

any thoughts or suggestions would help?

Starting with Win7, you need to download Live Messenger from Windows Live Essentials. It may be offered to you as an optional Windows Update, so check. Or Google it and download.

If you are saying it will not let you sign in to the web messenger from your Hotmail or Live Mail, then try signing out of the other computer first. If this fails, download and install Live Messenger to get the full program.

Now, I have no problem with live messenger on the windows xp, the new lap top with windows 7 has windows live....I down loaded it with no problem & shows in my add/remove programs & at start up menu, I have tried to down load it on windows 7...it seems to down load, but then I have a windows showing on bottom task bar that tells me windows live messsenger is off line........I have on the lap top removed & reinstalled with no luck. Any other thoughts??? wondering why it is fine on windows xp but won't work on windows 7.

    Welcome sumrwind,

When you double click on the WLM icon on the task bar, do you get the sign in screen ?

I am not on dial up, but cable, and can be signed in to WLM in 2 places at one time on my network. A win7 computer & an XP computer, even with different versions of IM
