My shutdown problem was due to driver

Running Win7 Home Edition X64 Build 7600 - had similar shutdown problems, including hang on "Windows shutting down" screen. Traced it all back to a bad driver (in my case I had recently installed Virtual Clonedrive, a CD/DVD emulator). After removing that program, everything is back to normal.
