do i just delete the stuff that i found in "windows.old" or is there a proper way to do this? thanks so much

Windows.old does not save programs which can be reinstalled. DVD's are needed for that.
To delete, go to c drive>properties>clean disc (check include system files)
It may be helpful to save it for a week, just in case something you want was not backed up. You can use everything from windows.old, except programs. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dell XPS 420 OS Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, clean install, upgrade disc CPU Intel Core2 processsor Q8200(2.33Ghz 1333FSB) Quad Core Tech Motherboard Dell Memory 6 gb Graphics Card ATI Radeon 256MB HD3650 Sound Card Intergrated 7.1 Channel Audio Monitor(s) Displays Dell SP2009W 20" Keyboard Dell USB Keyboard Mouse Dell Premium Optical USB Cooling Fan Hard Drives 640 GB Serial ATA Hard drive Internet Speed DSL 2.85 |

So you clean installed - great. I would take a look in the folder, keep what you need and delete the rest. You might need to take ownership of the folder first. Then go through the first 2 guides in my sig, and image 7, just in case something dies/breaks. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Sony Vaio Z46GDU OS Windows 7 Ultimate x86-64 CPU P9700@2.8GHz 1066MHz FSB Motherboard Sony branded Memory 6GB DDR3 1066MHz Graphics Card 9300M GS 256MB Dedicated (Speed) + Intel4500MHD (Stamina) Sound Card Realtek HD Audio Monitor(s) Displays 13.1' WXGA Screen Resolution 1600x900 Hard Drives 320GB 7200RPM w/ 16MB cache Internet Speed 1MB/s |

If you delete windows.old. That is all that wil be deleted. All programs that you installed with a DVD will be safe. Everything installed will be preserved. But with any computer, or user error, things can go wrong. Make a restore point (system restore) to make sure. With the system restore you can go back to the time before the delete.
