Device Manager list flashing off/refreshing every 2 sec

Windows7 64bit

Hi

In my Windows 7 (x64 bit)(all latest patches), when I open Device Manager, the entire list disappears and instantly reappears EVERY 2 SECONDS.
Strangely there is no sign any errors in the Devices that are being listend.

Also the sound card is also making a pong-pong sound - every 2 seconds. It sounds like two (low-ish) strings of a guitar being plucked... they are about 1 octave apart in pitch...

The pong-pong sounds are not QUITE in synch with the refreshing frequency of the Device Manager.

Any thoughts?
Do I have a virus? Or some weird conflict... ? or what?

Welcome

Run a thorough anti virus scan

Download and run malwebytes.

Check the sound card, may be defective, and Look for current drivers.

If there are no virus and the sound card is ok, use a sytem restore from before the problem. That should bring everything back to normal

Hello Ship,

This sounds like you may have some device that Windows 7 is trying to install or have connected. The pong pong type sound you here is for when a device (ex: USB flash drive) is connected and/or disconnected. Device Manager will automatically refresh like that when there has been a update made to the hardware or devices like when one is installed/connected or uninstalled/disconnected.

Did you connect any device to your computer before this started happenning?

The sound you hear is a piece of hardware ( your sound card ) trying to install or uninstall . When you say dissapears do you mean it condenses and expands ? It does this as it tries to install something. Perfectly normal.

Sorry to trouble you folks - yes I've discovered the problem.
It was being casued by the canofax LiDE 600F scanners software that have been trying to install.
as discussed here: (Canoscan LiDE 600F / Windows7 64bit Pro (v6.1 bld 7600) )

The problem was that I didnt notice this happening right away after I tried to instal the thing.

I have uninstalled it and the noises have stopped. But I still dont have a functioning scanner mind you ! :[

There are just somethings Windows 7 64Bit does not have drivers for yet.
I have a Linksys wireless G card, no 64 bit Windows 7 drivers, although I have taken it out of the machine a while ago.

Agreed, but wait a minute - Canon's web page claims that the driver *IS* a 64bit driver
ScanGear CS
Compatibility:
Operating system(s): Windows 7 64bit, Windows Vista 64bit, Windows XP x64

And likewise on this USA page:
CanoScan LiDE600F film and negative scanner

... the (more recent) driver claims to be for
"LiDE 600F Scanner Driver Ver. 12.1.2 (Windows 7 x64/Vista64/XP x64)"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but what seems more likely to me is that something is stopping the driver from actually installing. But perhaps something else is stopping the error message from appearing... ! (?)
