    Win7 Newb

    Hi all

Im coming from a linux background -- just installed a win 7 ultimate 64 bit on my xps studio 16. some basic questions.

    1) When I close the lid, then open, i get what i think is a BSOD with a message to the effect of 'windows has encountered an issue and is shutting down' --- is there something left on the disk that i can use to determine exactly what the issue is?

One of the exciting things about coming from linux is that I thought suspend would work better....

    2) Is there any must have software? I already installed switcher and dexpot to get facsimiles of some of the UI features I am more used to.

    3) Are there any good terminal apps?

    Thanx in advance...

Hello hvgotcodes, welcome to Seven Forums!

This would be the first thing I'd try.

thanx for the quick reply. unfortunately, its not a startup issue, its a 'resume from sleep' issue. resume from hibernate works fine....

Go to start, type in event viewer and then look for errors, after the problem.

Go to device manager and check for driver problems (yellow markers)

Make sure drivers are up to date

Make sure your video card is working properly.

Most resume from/enter sleep mode problems are due to issues with either the motherboard drivers or the system bios.

First thing I would suggest is to go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and check if you are running the latest, chipset drivers and bios.

The drivers available from windows update are not always the latest available and the manufacturer, motherboard specific ones, have solved these issues for many others

Unfortunately self installs of Windows on laptops frequently have suspend/resume issues and they are generally all down to having a complete set of drivers that play nice. Laptop manufacturers spend a LOT of time getting that stuff to work right, including direct contact with parts vendors to resolve problems. I've had good luck with it working great on laptops preinstalled. But lousy luck on do it myself installs

It sort of becomes up to you to try to get it working. Updating all drivers (Primarily sound/video) from the latest manufacturers websites is a start...

And yes, look for driver events in the event viewer (in the control panel). It may point to the culprit driver/hardware right away.

    hmm

i do see an error that references the following

    C:\dell\drivers\R228550\R228550\bcmwltry.exe

have no idea what that means but its something to start with....

yeah, the laptop came with vista on it, i put ubuntu on it, but decided to give w7 a shakedown. I updated to latest bios, and grabbed a ton of drivers off the dell site for this machine; must have missed one....

Go to device manager, look for the yellow warning. If you do not see any make sure the video card is up to date. You may want to replace it, to be sure that you have a good one.
