Quick! Format question

    Quick! Format question

I'm upgrading my Desktop from Win7 32 to 64 bit. I have 55 gb of music to backup. I have an ipod that can accomodate that music in a library, but not hold the 55gb as files on an external HD.

    SHOULD I...

just format and use 3rd party software (CopyTrans, etc) to take my music from the ipod back to the desktop once it's all clean and shiny and empty?

    OR

should I take the time to put 55gb of music onto a backup system?

    THANKS

If you've got an external to hand, just use that and drag it over.

only external HDD I've got is on my ipod, which doesn't have enough free space (110 gb, currently about 45 available). I could delete the contents of it so that it would have enough space to fit all my music in one go as an external HDD...but that seems somewhat redundant.

Why not just leave the music on there and use an ipod extractor program afterward?

My suggestion would be to find the funds for a external USB drive. Since you don't have anything for backup, now's the time to get that drive, backup your musing and anything else you want/need. Then when your system is all reinstalled and working properly, restore all your files and continue to use the drive as an external backup.

You can never be too cautious with your data. About $100 should get you a nice solution.

Currently using Netbook as backup and my ipod as my portable external HDD. I'm just trying to hurry up and get out of the backup stage and into the formatting/reinstall already!

I think I'll delete some songs, backup to the ipod's hdd.

Worked fine. Just took a long time to backup the 100+ gb of my data via my ipod, since the netbook has only a 1.6 ghz processor and the ipod data cable can only transfer so fast. In the future I'll end up with a 1 TB reserve HDD, probably, as well as a high capacity portable one. hopefully integrated into a PMP like the 6th gen iphone, or something.

    Thanks for the help!
