Do I have to buy another Windows 7?

Do I have to buy another Windows 7?

This might sound like a strange question, but no one I’ve asked so far can give me a straight answer.

I was thinking of upgrading, but decided instead to build new. My question is, do I have to buy another copy of Windows 7? I will be reusing my existing C drive as C drive with an activated copy of Windows 7 on it.

Can any one advise me?

You can't have one copy of Windows 7 on two computers. It sounds like that's what you're planning so the answer would be yes.

I would'nt of thought so but don't quote me on that.

The last licence was tied to the hardware of the other computer and although your using the same drive I don't think that would qualify.

Just type your question into google and see what it throws up.

Is it a full retail version or upgrade, or OEM Version ?

My new build will be a mobo, cpu, ram and graphics card. All the other bits and pieces will be the same. I have the full 32/64 bit retail version.

At what point does an upgrade become a new build?

It will probably take a phone call to Microsoft for activation, explaining a new MB & Ram

If you're not sure, open up a command prompt and type the following...

slmgr -dli

...and it will tell you which it is...

This is a little iffy because a new mobo = a new system. You may get away with a robocall to Microsoft. I would try that before you spend money on a new Windows 7.

Hello Jessica.

If it's "full retail" you should have no problems, have alook at the tutorial below.

Assuming its retail it will work. I recently changed out my motherboard, graphics and Hard drive, etc. I called instead, and made it so i could talk to a real person. The person I spoke to had an accent from India was but very good at his job. Very nice and wasn't like a robot. Knew his English very well and well everything worked out without having to struggle to explain to him.. Other peoples horror stories made me scared but now that i passed that phase, I was actually happy.
