    Open file suggestions

    Hey,

new to the forum but have been occasionally creeping for the past few years.

I have a question about "suggestions" when opening a file. Previously on vista, when entering a name into the "open file" field of any program, it would give suggestions basing on the letters I typed into the field. Please don't say it is associated with indexing, cuz I don't wanna turn that on again.

    Example attachment.

Well, you're right in thinking it should show suggestions, as it does do that in Windows 7 as well.

I'm not sure why it's not showing here, though. You can try turning indexing back on (not sure why it's off...?) but I don't think that is the cause...

What you may need to do is go into "Turn windows Features On & Off" and check the Indexing option

       Note
this will turn on the indexing systems used in previous windows versions and should not change your choice to turn off the main (New?) indexing in win7

this change may give the results you want but will take a while to build up the data

I don't think that Indexing is required

    I have "Indexing" off.

    When I try to:

    • "Save" pictures, I get suggestions based on the folder that I have selected.
    • "Open" a file in "IrfanView", I also get suggestions based on the folder that I have selected.

Perhaps the program you are using doesn't like W7.

Strange, it does this with all programs......

Before I bought win7 ultimate, my win7 basic copy also did not do this. But the same program did in vista. Hmmmm.....

Thank you guys for looking into this. I'll try turning indexing back on. I had it shut off because I had it off since vista, kinda made it sluggish.

Edit: yeah, didn't work. I made sure of adding the folders in the indexing options but nothing.

    Run sfc command?

Have you tried running "sfc /scannow" from the "Command prompt"?

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Does it make a difference if you run the programs as administrator?

Right click on the program icon and select "Run as administrator" (see animated gif below).

Yeah, doesn't do a damn thing.

Thanks alot for your help everyone.
