Screensaver and Power settings not working

I am running win7 7000 x64 on a quad core intel box. Most things have been working great but I have been having one annoying problem, the screensaver won't start, and neither will the power saving settings (i.e. turning off monitor, computer sleep)

Basically I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and figured out what software or hardware could be causing it or if anyone knows of a tool to check what input is keeping the computer out of the idle state.

With build 7000 you may need to find updated drivers for your chipset for this to work.

Alternatively, you could upgrade to 7048 or a newer build (7068 seems to be getting votes for the most stable, and 7077 as well)

I was thinking about upgrading as well. I was reading couple of the threads in the installation forum.

What kind of problems do you run into when you upgrade? Is the risk worth it? Anyway to minimize the risk?

Problems - everything from an irrecoverable HD to ... nothing.

As to being worth it - depends upon your setup and how easy it is to install apps....

ways to minimize the risk - read every prompt carefully and make sure that you are plugged into a battery backup source before starting. Other than that, no.

Well.... I suppose I can just take a ghost backup, is there anyway to back up app settings?

I can also install on a separate partition but is there a way to migrate software and settings (similar to what os x does)

Windows Easy Transfer (I think it may have been called User and Settings Transfer in Vista)....
