Why can't I rename or move the folder in Win7?

Dear all,

I have a serious problem in my Windows 7 system. Now when I want to rename the folder, an error window always warning "The file names(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location that has a shorter path".

However, I just want to rename the folder from 'New folder' to 'a', which I don't think is a long name for a folder.

So anyone can help me to solve the problem?

Thank you

Actually, I think the name may be too short. Try a name a bit longer. Maybe with 5 letters. Let us know, the result.

I have tried the folder name as 'abcde', 'new folde', 'new', 'folders', and so on. But none of them worked.

What is the full folder path containing the folder you are trying to rename? For example "D:\Pictures\Computer Products\Company Logos"

In Windows the maximum length of a path can be 260 characters only.
ie. <Drive>:\<some 256-character path string><NUL>" where "<NUL>" represents the invisible terminating null character for the current system codepage.

If the file you are trying to rename is located in a folder depth, where the character count is greater than 260, then you will get the error.

If the folder structure is like this (246 characters)
C:\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP QRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGH IJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\
then the file name can be 13 characters only (including the . and extension)
246+13+1 (NUL) = 260

In the Windows API, the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which is defined as 260 characters. A local path is structured in the following order: drive letter, colon, backslash, name components separated by backslashes, and a terminating null character. For example, the maximum path on drive D is "D:\<some 256-character path string><NUL>" where "<NUL>" represents the invisible terminating null character for the current system codepage. (The characters < > are used here for visual clarity and cannot be part of a valid path string.)

My full folder path is "C:\Users\nicoson\Desktop\new folder".

Actually all the folders' names in my system can not be renamed or moved by windows command.

But I have tried in cmd window, the folders can be moved in the cmd by using the command 'move'. It is weird, do you think so?

I have heared many other people who use vista also met this problem before. Is it the system bug? Can this problem be solvable?

I don't think it was caused by the software installing.
Because the problem happened when I was moving 3 folders into one folder. Two moved successfully, while on failed. After that, I can never move any folders again.
