Why can't I rename or move the folder in Win7? Dear all,
I have a serious problem in my Windows 7 system. Now when I want to rename the folder, an error window always warning "The file names(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location that has a shorter path".
However, I just want to rename the folder from 'New folder' to 'a', which I don't think is a long name for a folder.
So anyone can help me to solve the problem?
Thank you

Actually, I think the name may be too short. Try a name a bit longer. Maybe with 5 letters. Let us know, the result. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dell XPS 420 OS Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, clean install, upgrade disc CPU Intel Core2 processsor Q8200(2.33Ghz 1333FSB) Quad Core Tech Motherboard Dell Memory 6 gb Graphics Card ATI Radeon 256MB HD3650 Sound Card Intergrated 7.1 Channel Audio Monitor(s) Displays Dell SP2009W 20" Keyboard Dell USB Keyboard Mouse Dell Premium Optical USB Cooling Fan Hard Drives 640 GB Serial ATA Hard drive Internet Speed DSL 2.85 |

What is the full folder path containing the folder you are trying to rename? In Windows the maximum length of a path can be 260 characters only.
ie. <Drive>:\<some 256-character path string><NUL>" where "<NUL>" represents the invisible terminating null character for the current system codepage.
If the file you are trying to rename is located in a folder depth, where the character count is greater than 260, then you will get the error.
If the folder structure is like this (246 characters)
C:\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP QRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGH IJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\
then the file name can be 13 characters only (including the . and extension)
246+13+1 (NUL) = 260 Quote: In the Windows API, the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which is defined as 260 characters. A local path is structured in the following order: drive letter, colon, backslash, name components separated by backslashes, and a terminating null character. For example, the maximum path on drive D is "D:\<some 256-character path string><NUL>" where "<NUL>" represents the invisible terminating null character for the current system codepage. (The characters < > are used here for visual clarity and cannot be part of a valid path string.) | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP EliteBook 8530w Mobile Workstation OS Windows 7 Ultimate x86 build 7600 (XP, 98SE, 95, 3.11, DOS 7.10 on VM) + Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx CPU Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40 GHz, 3 MB L2 cache) Motherboard Mobile Intel PM45 Express Chipset ICH9M-Enhanced Memory 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Graphics Card ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 with 256 MB Sound Card SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio Monitor(s) Displays 15.4-inch WXGA anti-glare (1280 x 800 resolution) Screen Resolution 1280 x 800 Mouse Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad, USB Mouse Hard Drives 250GB Fujitsu MJA2250BH G2 ATA Device (IDE),

My full folder path is "C:\Users\nicoson\Desktop\new folder".
Actually all the folders' names in my system can not be renamed or moved by windows command.
But I have tried in cmd window, the folders can be moved in the cmd by using the command 'move'. It is weird, do you think so?
I have heared many other people who use vista also met this problem before. Is it the system bug? Can this problem be solvable? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dell Inspiron e1705 OS Windows 7 (7600) x86 CPU Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2 GHz) Motherboard Unknown Dell MB Memory 2 GB Graphics Card ATI Mobility Radeon x1400 (128 MB Dedicated) Sound Card SigmaTel HD Audio; Turtle Beach Audio Advantage SRM Monitor(s) Displays Laptop 17" Screen Resolution 1920x1200 Other Info Dell Inspiron Mini 10v (Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHz; 1GB; Windows 7 Ultimate) |

Because the problem happened when I was moving 3 folders into one folder. Two moved successfully, while on failed. After that, I can never move any folders again. | My System Specs | | Why can't I rename or move the folder in Win7? problems? All times are GMT -5. The time now is 03:46 AM. | |
