Workaround to search/sort files by [ext]?

Is there a workaround to search and sort files by [extension] NOT [type]?

There appears to be no column heading for file extension eg *.mp3; *.txt; *.cs; etc.

As a very recent convert from XP I also miss the advanced search dialogue screen - is it hidden somewhere?

Hi Mike,

You can still use Advanced Search by pressing Windows Key + F, but the you will need to click on the search box first to see the Kind, Date modified, etc... options to use to search with instead.

Hope this helps,

There's very easy way for sorting files since Vista without having any search or trick to do

Open a explorer windows, go to the folder wich contain the files to sort (of course if the folder is indexed it's better, for performance issue).
Then you just need to click on little arrow of the "type" header at the top of the explorer tab. If the "type" column doesn't appear you can find it like under XP.
When clicking on it you will have all the type of files included in the current folder (by extension).. and you can group them as you want.
The best of all is that you can save this grouping result like any other search results. The "blue folder" allways include a real time answer of your search's criterias

Thanks Brink - Windows Key + F for advanced search.

Maybe Windows 7 might restore ext as a column header in RC/RTM.

In the meantime I'm half-tempted to put the ext value in the genre column!

PS - Maybe a conspiracy theory - forcing use of libraries so microsoft has easy access to drm control/dominance of digital media etc.

Thanks Le Poilu - type lacks the granularity of ext - to extract system-wide files of a particular extension unless each ext is given a separate/unique default application

"Types" column show you the files by extension
It's the same.

Thanks LePoilu - I get the idea - maybe through time I'll see the benefits over the XP search dialogue.

PS clicking on the web link gives a clear image. (Clicking on the image does not magnify.)

There's a lot a little things like that in Vista/Seven. When you know and use them, hard to go back after... like the new adress bar
