Right click on the task bar, select properties, and then change the "Use small Icons" settings i.e. if it is checked, uncheck it and if it is unchecked, check it. Then click OK.
If the problem returns after re-login, try updating your video driver or do a system restore to an earlier time.

    hi Bill2,
tried ur method still the same. the wmp icon just wont appear and will not appear even if tried to pin it like picture 3 above. i have just updated my video drivers 2 days ago. unable to do system restore as i deleted them thinking that they were just the old ones.

OK, try unlocking your taskbar and then pinning.

Items that are pinned to the taskbar are saved in the following folder

    "C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar"

Check whether WMP is there. If not copy, paste manually, reboot, then check if it appears in the taskbar.

I found this solution on another site.

This process erases all the pinned items on all of your programs (you'll have to pin them again afterwards).
    1. Delete all files at %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
    2. Delete all files at %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations
    3. Reboot
    4. Re-pin the items you wish

If this doesnt work, i'm out of ideas except maybe fiddlin around with things like never combine, always combine etc.
