    Windows 7 taskbar icons

Hi. I apologize if this has been asked before, but I've just gotten a new pc with Windows 7. Love it, but really do not like the taskbar icons that pop up when I hover over an item on the desktop. Is there a way to remove this feature? Also, sometimes, (for no apparent reason I can see, I get this "transparent" square on my desktop. It goes away, but what causes it?

    Many thanks for your help.

    Welcome!

For your first question, see here: Taskbar Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable

Your second issue almost sounds like Aero Peek. It occurs when you hover your mouse over a certain button in your taskbar.

I would counsel waiting a while before turning off the TaskBar image popups. They are different from XP and take a bit of getting used to , but once you do you will find them very useful. Especially when you have multiple instances of a program open. Using the popups makes it easy to select the right one to work with. At least this is true for me.

Also, if you'd like the old XP-style taskbar buttons back, right click on the taskbar and click Properties. Check the box for "Use small icons" and choose "Never Combine" for Taskbar Buttons.

At first I liked the new 7-style taskbar, but I found it too big and clunky after a while and decided to let my nostalgia fully kick in.

I dumped the left side SuperBar and put back the XP style Quick Launch after giving the other a few months. Never did like it. The icons occupied to much space, even when set to small.

This tutorial tells you how to do it: How to enable/disable Quick Launch in Windows 7
