Help with event viewer please!

Hi Everyone.

I have just purchased a Dell Studio 15 with Windows 7 installed. It has been working fine for about 3 weeks, although it does get used a lot.
However, this morning, when I turned the laptop on, my wallpaper was reset to the default backdrop & my desk top icons were gone. It was as though the computer had been reset to the factory settings.
There was a speech bubble notice from the bottom right of the screen advising me that the computer had been started in a tempory profile & I could access all my files as normal. It advised me to restart & check the event log for details.
I have now restarted the laptop & everything seems normal apart from the desktop icons which are still missing!
Has anyone had this problem before, or can someone advise me what i'm looking for in the event viewer?
Thanks!

Lee.

In Eventviewer, create Custom view, then filter by source and select User Profile Service. If your issue has been logged it should be there with the date and time.
Also, see this page.

To be safe be sure to run an antivirus scan and download and use this from malwarebytes: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware : Malwarebytes

It always makes me concerned when unexpected problems, like yours, arise.

Hi,

I've done as you advised Bill2, There was an error listed. It says this:

Windows cannot delete the profile directory C:\Users\TEMP. This error may be caused by files in this directory being used by another program.

DETAIL - The directory is not empty.

I also noticed several of there warnings in the event log, they read like this:

Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

I'm sorry, but I really don't know what this could mean. Can you shed any light on the subject?

whitworth77,

Since you are being logged on with a temporary profile and also as appears from your event log, it looks like you have programs that are not closing handles that keep the registry open. There is a program called UPHClean Tool (user profile hive cleanup service) that releases these handles. In fact it also makes a log of the culprit app.

Download from http://blogs.technet.com/uphclean/at...t/3145464.ashx.
If required, run in compatibility mode.

Hi Bill2,

That one didn't work either, but I did find this site:

Download details: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

I tried to install but I keep getting this message:

There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program run as part of the set up did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

I have no idea what this means, but something is not working properly. Is this sort of problem commen with new computers? I've only had the laptop for just under 1 month?!

Did you try running in compatibility mode? Right click the installer package, open properties, go to compatibility tab, then select Windows Vista. Then try to install.

There is no option for vista in the drop down menu, only previous versions of windows. Tried that & I still get the same message.
