Having Trouble backing up to DVD

I was backing up my files to dvd useing windows backup and restore feature.

It got 25% through when it told me to insert a new disk to contiue.

it said the disk had to have the label " JAY 31/03/2010 DRIVE 1 ".

but this is too long to have as a label "windows doesnt acctually let you name it this long".

I tried naming it something else but it resulted in a volume label error on the backup which it askes you again to rename the label.

So how do i backup if i cant give it the label it needs.

also i looked at the back of the disk and it seems to have only burned to a tiny fraction of the disk instead of useing the whole space. Any ideas?

    Thanks for looking.

I, and some other members, have found backing up to DVD is a pain. You will be much better off using an external hard drive.

Back up to your internal HD and also to an external. In the event of normal problems it will be easy to restore from the internal. In the event of hard drive failure etc, you have the external.

One of the big problems with DVD's is that some writers do not like some dyes that are used in the coating of the DVD's. I make a fair few Video DVD's and what i did was to try a few different makes to see which worked best and consistently with my writer. I found that as I had a Sony writer then Sony disks were best but I might just have been lucky. I also found that to record below the maximum speed of your writer. If it's max is 4x then burn at 2x. But the advice to use an external HD is by far the best advice IMHO. And they are so cheap now.

Yeah i know there cheap but at the moment if its not free then i cant have...

I will back up internal for now but i would really like a disk backup (untill i get around to getting an external (my 500gb broke))

But the main problem is that the label it wants me to give the dvd is too long and my computer will not alow more than 16 characters for a label.

I dont understand why its asing me to do something which the computer doesnt allow.

There are DVD's and there are DVD's. Yours may not be compatible. Do they have the correct format?

I dunno, there the cheap 50 for a tenner kind.

But why would the label you can give your dvd during format matter on the kind of dvd you have.

Surely its up to windows what you can label a dvd.
