    Disappearing Icons on Desktop

Dell Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E7500 Computer
    Inspirion 545s 00
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    6GB Memory
    750GB Hard Drive

The icons that I put on my desktop for 3 of the Games shown on the startup menu will not stay on my desktop. I have done "Create a Shortcut" for Hearts, Freecell, and Spider and they will stay until shutting down. When booting up the next day, they're no longer there. These are the only icons that I have this situation with. The others are fine and do stick around for me, which I'm glad.

Is there a trick to getting the games icons to stay put? Is there somewhere I need to change a setting for the icons to be cleaned up like I did in XP? The ones I have there I don't want to go away on me.

    Thanks,

    windsorlady

Here's a tutorial to create a shortcut for the whole games explorer, Probably not what your looking for but I'm sure someone will come along with better info.

I'm believe I am having the same issues, and this never happened before, it just started happening a few weeks ago.

I can create the game short cuts from the games explorer on to the desktop, then for some reason (either a reboot or just some time by the next morning) the are gone.

Other game shortcuts created from the "start menu" stay.

Any ideas on why this would be happening now?

I sure don't know -- mine has been happening since day one! I can still get to the games on the start menu, but I was in hopes of a shortcut on the desktop like I had in XP. I do plan to digest the tutorial provided by someone above though. Maybe it will do the trick.

Having identical problem, even to the same games. Once a week, usually Sunday morning, they disappear. Have tried rebuilding icon cache, no change. The ONLY icons being deleted are those that i create by going into Explorer, to the program executable, selecting & right-clicking, then using the "Send to Desktop (Create Shortcut)" option. System icons, and any created by an install process, are left alone. Hopefully, this might give someone else a clue??

Hello K, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if using the tutorial below to turn off the System Maintenance Troubleshooter may stop them from disappearing on you afterwards.

    Hope this helps,

Is there an option to only disable icons from maintenance?
It's something really really upsetting when suddenly icons on the desktop disappear.
The computer desktop is the equivalent of an office desktop, imagine you have your stuff organized on it then suddenly Mr. Micro$oft cleaning company trash everything in the bin because you haven't used the stuff very much!
I agree that the automatic cleaning is a good action because novice computer users usually make a huge mess on the desktop, this would be a good choice on Windows 7 Home but NOT the Professional or Ultimate where people know a "bit" more a bout personalizing their machines.
One day I witnessed a colleague in office screaming who the F..k! deleted the network shortcuts from the desktop!!!
I believe who worked that setting for Micro$oft must be a computer noob!

    Hello looked,

Not that I'm aware of. It's an all or none setting.

I remember I did it with a clean Windows SP1 without updates, there was a check box to disable icons cleaning, maybe the last updates changed the way it works.

There's this below in group policy, but it's only for Windows Server 2003 and XP.
