Desktop icons don't work

I recently built and installed a windows 7 64 bit pc for a customer of mine. She's had it for about 3 weeks without issue. I just no got an email stating that none of her desktop icons work and the desktop itself doesn't seem to respond to mouse clicks. She can however use items from the taskbar. Has anyone seen this issue before?

Never seen it before but it does happen, just google frozen desktop.

Suggestions:

First run a Virus/Rootkit/Malware scan. Have her download Avast 5 Free & Malwarebytes
If that doesn't fix it, System Restore.
If that doesn't fix it or work, Repair Install.
If that doesn't fix it, Clean Install.

Here's a fix for a very similar issue - Windows 7 Desktop icons and right click ability stop working. Let me know if this helps at all.

Cheers,

Here is a statement from the customer that acurately depicts the problem.

First turn on okay. then I opened more windows and when finished I minimize, they then work. However if I ever use the close all function...... dead desktop.

I looked at it today and did a system restore for her. When she checked it afterward and the issue was still there. I did a bios flash and that didn't help either.

I had the user do a system restore as far back as she could go and that solved the issue. My instinct tells me a windows update caused the issue as that was the only thing that was insatlled in the median. If I find out which one caused it I'll report back.

Yep - my pc was working ok for a couple of months but since last M/soft updates (I had 5+2 on my PC) bloody Explorer mouse has gone back to it's bad 'glitchy' old ways again!

Whatever they did interfered with mouse/graphics

Check your Antivirus

We've come across this exact same symptom. It turned out to be AVG 9. Once it was removed, the computer worked normally again.

Congrats finding your solution - I only use M/Soft Essentials/firewall at the mo'!

My mouse has settled down a bit since last post though. Poss Ati Catalyst 10.4 update mostly sorted it.

Hi,
I faced the same problem. After reading these posts and many times of trial and error, I removed Internet Explorer from my Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit os and now the problem is solved on my system. Now I use google chrome for exploring web and have no problem with my desktop!
