    Two programs:

    Autoruns for Windows

    Process Explorer

Most of the processes are probably not useful or updaters and self-installed.

My system when I got it had 75 processes and I dropped about 30 of them as they were not needed at all. I dont recommend disabling win 7 functionality, but 3rd party apps try to load on startup and if you aren't using them daily then dont allow them to load you will see a tremendoes improvement. pre-loading may save you 10 seconds when running the app, but if it kills your boot speed by 5 minutes then in my opinion, you are loosing speed. Just my opinion.

Also Winpatrol is a good combination of Autoruns and process explorer, but it is shareware so I haven't used it yet.

MSE and the newest version of Avast are nearly invisible and have no noticeable impact on performance.

I've found that you pay for bloat with paid AV programs, almost in proportion to what you pay.

The only startup programs I allow in msconfig are AV, gadgets and Stiky notes.

The maint. tools I use (monthly or less) are CCleaner "Run Cleaner" and registry tab, then Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers. There have been no issues with these in several hundred installs over 10 years time. They are the state of the art.

The ultimate fix for this is a clean reinstall of Win7, adding programs slowly so you can observe any performance hits. If you have pre-installed 7, you only need to borrow or find any installer to unlock all versions, then install your licensed version which will activate using the Product Key stickered to the machine.

You might also try IE8 as they finally got it right. I get performance hits from Firefox or Chrome now that I don't see at all with IE8 which seems more stable overall.
