Not shutting down properly.

I'm loving Windows 7, starting to use it as my main OS. I understand it's a beta, but for some reason it's not shutting down properly. I have created a .batch file figuring that it's the drivers, but it still doesn't seem to shutdown. I put the shutdown script in Group Policy. I can't seem to get it to shutdown properly.

Here is the script I am using:

Code:
echo "Killing ati . . ."
TASKKILL /IM ATI2evxx.exe /T /F
TASKKILL /IM MOM.exe /T /F
TASKKILL /IM CCC.exe /T /F
cls
echo "Done. Killing Synaptics"
TASKKILL /IM SynTPHelper.exe /T /F
TASKKILL /IM SynTEnh.exe /T /F
cls
echo "Done."

I do have some external drives (mouse and sd card) so I'll get back to you in a few.

What (if any) Antivirus software do you use?

I had the exact same issue when I was running Norton Internet Security 2009, i have since changed my antivirus to Avast! which has not caused me any issues at all :p

Just a thought.

Thanks! I've decided to uninstall Kaspersky and go with Avast. Do I have to run it in compability mode?

No, you can install it straight off, no need to use compatability of any sort :)

Version 4.8 is the latest & it works great.

You could also try ccleaner to see if that fixes any issues you might have.

I've had a shutdown issue since I purchased my Emachines laptop and have never been able to resolve my shutdown issue. My system acts like it will shutdown and then comes back on. From what I am reading here, it may be my power supply or the fact that I have Norton 2009 trial edition (19 days left). I am going to put Avast on and see if that does anything. I've always hated Norton and had trouble unstalling McAfee years ago. Thanks and I'll post if this helps me.

I went to Microsoft and checked and have all the updates that come for Windows 7 including SP1 and SP2. Unfortunately, I updated as soon as I turned that computer on when I bought it without checking the shutdown status. Since it is a factory install, I have no factory DVD's or iso CD's of my initial installation of Windows 7. I have a few options, but in my checking today, I ran an Ubuntu Linux CD without the install and couldn't shut down. I also ran an energy report (powercfg -energy) and tried to run a CD/DVD bootable light install of XP to see if I could shut down and had no luck. I'm wondering if this is a hardware issue and not an issue with Windows 7 at all.

I don't want to change my OS and neither does my wife; I've got Ubuntu on another computer that crashed a few months ago, and like it better than nothing, but want to keep my Windows open ;)

Any more suggestions are greatly appreciated!

John

There is no sp1 or sp2 for win7.

Run Norton liveupdate to install nortons files for win7.

try to go to safe mode. If you can shut down in safemode properly then you have a problem with 3rd party program.

msconfig then Device and Conquer the startup.

Narrow down which is causing the problem first before getting in to conclusions.

My mistake; it was the SP1 and 2 for Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer.

I have actually removed Norton and put Avira AntiVir on my computer so it is not that. I had run live update before, though; I always stay on top of my antivirus and firewall..

I tried shutting down in safe mode before and had no luck; I'll try it again.

Thanks,
John

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I can't get the computer to shut down from basically a bois program without Wiindows 7 itself, doesn't that rule out the possibility of the OS itself. Maybe one of the drivers from emachines is the culprit....

I don't know that much, so this is some speculation...
