Add your system specs

In order for people to assist you with any problems you may have, please complete the System Specs section of your CP as comprehensibly as you can (see mine for an example of the information required). For ready-built systems, such as laptops, please include the manufacturer and full model number in the appropriate section. Don't forget to keep it up to date. Many problems can be explained and solved with the aid of this information - in some cases a simple driver and/or program upgrade is all that is required. If you are doing this on behalf of someone else, please include the information of their machine in the post.

Don't forget that we need help in order to help you - only you have access to your machine. If, for example, your mouse was working normally before installing a program and now no longer works correctly, please tell us the name of that program.

For the benefit of everyone, and to ensure the safety of personal information, would all users please note that they SHOULD NOT include any personal information such as email addresses, real addresses, telephone numbers or other identifiable material in their post. Such information will be removed by the Administrators or Moderators. This is for YOUR protection. As part of the registration process, your email address is held by the Forums to enable you to be notified if there are any replies to any of the posts/threads you have contributed to. People registered as members on this Forum can contact other members directly for advice using the Private Messaging (PM) service. They DO NOT need to know your actual email address as this function is automatically taken care of by the Forums.

These also fall into the phishing category, as they use social engineering/manipulation techniques to gain further information from you:

They already have your e-mail address (either chosen at random or from details found on forums and other websites). All they want now is some data to link that address to an actual person, and this is what the above quote shows. DO NOT under any circumstances reply to any e-mails that ask for this information, especially if they also want your bank details (I suspect that if you fill in this information as requested by the scammer, you could well get another e-mail asking for those details).
This is why I strongly recommend EVERYBODY to read this post, and to take note of what it says: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-d...html#post23231
Unfortunately, if you do put your e-mail address on a post it may be too late. By the time it has been spotted and removed (or if you subsequently realise and remove it after sending your post), then the chances are that it might already have been spotted by the scammers.

A Preferred Method of Uploading/Posting Screen Shots

The method used by most to upload screen shots and pictures is saving it in .jpeg/jpg/jpe format and by using the Snipping Tool and the Attachments (paperclip) Name: paperclip.JPG
Views: 15895
Size: 8.0 KB at the top of the Reply Box.

If you do not know about the Snipping Tool, please read this Tutorial on it.

How to use the Snipping Tool in Vista - Vista Forums

To start, use the Snipping Tool or whatever screenshot program you prefer and save it as a .jpeg/jpg/jpe.

When you are ready to include a screen shot in your thread/post, click on the paperclip in the reply box, where it will go to the Manage Attachments page.

Forum Rules and info- Please Read!-method.jpg

From there, click on the browse button to open up the File Upload window.
Insert you image and click on The Upload button to the right.

You can also upload the file from a url.

Now, close the Attachment window at the top right.

You can now reclick on your paperclip..

Forum Rules and info- Please Read!-capture6.jpg

and pick the file to insert into your post.
It will look like this:

You can then Preview your post to see what it will look like.

This is not the only way to do this but it is one method used by many that keeps the threads/posts looking clean instead of having huge screenshots.

How To Ask For Help

This may be a silly post, but the fact that is posted at all says there is a problem.

I see a lot of posts, especially from "newbies" asking for help without providing basic information. First off, we can’t help if we don’t know what the problem is; and we can’t figure out the problem without such basic information as systems specs and a clear understanding of what the problem is. It’s the lack of these two basic things that causes posts to be ignored or incorrectly diagnosed!

Below are three examples of bad/problematic questions. Some were re-worded as not to embarrass.

Example 1:

"Can anyone help me, I was playing Crysis today and all of a sudden the game froze. I have a HP Presario xxx with Vista premium. Can anyone tell me how to fix it?"

This problem can be caused by any number of issues. System specs along with a little more info such as error codes might help narrow down the problem and/or eliminate unnecessary steps, or purchases, like buying a new video card, only to find it didn't fix the problem. Doh!

Example 2:

"The Postmaster said my mail box is nearly full! I have a lot of messages in my sent Items folder, but Vista won’t let me delete them!? What do I do now?"

This question is so vague that it leads to more questions than answers. This is an easy post to ignore!

Example 3:

"Help a friend of mine has vista ultimate 64 and has been getting a lot of bsods lately I told him he needs to stay away from vista as it’s the worst thing since hell but he insists that vista is a good os and has gotten a bad wrap but yet he still has bsods and don’t know to get rid of them can someone tell me what to look for to help him since he really doesn’t know computers all that well he as a gateway he bought from best buy with 2gig of memory and a intel cpu and ati 2600 video card thanks"

While you might laugh and think no one would make such a post, I can assure you, I’ve actually helped someone with a post like this. And believe me, it wasn’t fun.

While I’m certainly not going to belittle anyone on their grammar, I would ask that you use at least the basics such as capitals, periods, and paragraphs. A post like the one above is certainly hard to read and understand without them, and in all likelihood, be ignored! Please do not be offended if asked to "fix" your grammar. This only helps to clarify what you’re trying to say or ask.
Part two of the above post is that now we’re working third party, which can get very confusing. If you’re going to ask a question for a friend, be prepared to have all the pertinent information as well as the ability to work with the machine.

Remember we don’t physically have your computer in front of us, thus the information you provide goes a long way in the quality, timeliness, and accuracy, of the answers, suggestions, or help provided by the members here.

The bottom line is if you want people to help you, you need to help us by providing clear concise questions with all the pertinent information. This will insure we make a more accurate diagnosis of your problem.

While we can’t guarantee your problem(s) will be solved, you can rest assured that the best possible solution will be offered based on the info you provide.

Here’s a few suggestions to help us help you:

- List your systems specs!!! This helps to ensure all the pertinent information is listed. In the case of Windows 7, which version, RTM, RC, Beta, Build#

- Likewise don’t list your system specs under your first post, if the thread turns ten pages long, your specs get buried.

- If you do not know the specs of the PC, but it was purchased from a PC manufactures or retailer, provide a link to the model showing the system specs.

- Let us know your level of experience with computers.

- Be as specific as possible about the issue rather than saying "it doesn't work" or "It crashes a lot".

- Provide as much information as possible on any error message(s), etc...

- What were you doing when the problem occurred?

- List any steps taken to duplicate or cause the problem and what you’ve tried to fix it.

- If the problem is solved, tell us!

- If someone has helped you, rep them! It’s a way of saying thanks for your help.

One last thing, don’t get mad at someone if they remind you of some basic forum etiquette such as hijacking posts, privately posting numerous members for help, or posting the same questions in various forums. These are rules we all have to live by, and are clearly stated when you read??? The forum rules before being allowed to sign up.

Again, help us help you

Thanks.

My two cents
