Trying to save pics before I reformat....

    Hi,

I am trying to reformat a friends computer, the problem is when I try to open up windows Media player, it says "Not enough memory to open" so I can't burn the pics & the problem in the first place was she could not connect to the internet so i can not download anything or put a cd in and take the program from there (nothing will run/install do to memory). I get the blue screen when i try to start it up so my only option is safe mode, i am now trying to just move the pics to my flash drive & in safe mode you can copy/cut but you cannot paste! I would love to just reformat it but she wants her pics........So i would like to know if there is anyway i can change the option in safe mode to where i can paste! Seems like such a small problem but it's driving me crazy! Thanks!

Also I cannot uninstall anything in safe mode.

Can you get to the folder that contains the images? If so you should be able to drag and drop to a USB stick. If you are going to format then there seems little point in trying to unistall any programs. You will loose them all anyway. Have you tried a system restore in Safe more. Do try all the options before formatting. When you post back let us know what operating system is on your friends PC

    Hey,

    Thanks for the reply!
Yes I can get to the folder that contains the pics, but i cannot drag/drop or paste in Safe Mode.
I was trying to uninstall so i could run windows media player, see if i could clear up some space.
I was unable to do a system restore & tried everything else.
& She is running Windows xp Home Edition.

    Thanks again for the reply!

Can you run XP in full mode? Can you drag and drop then. I never use Media player for burning. Just drag & drop then burn.

Boot from the XP cd. When the setup screen appears, press R to enter the Recovery Console, then press 1 and hit enter (when asked which xp installation), enter your password and press enter, now you should be at the command prompt. Navigate to the folders where your pictures are stored and copy them to the flash drive.

If you dont have the XP cd, you can use a bootable cd/dvd like UBCD or Hiren's. I often use Knoppix in such situations. Knoppix is a live CD linux distro, ideal for this kind of jobs. You'll need to download it and burn to CD.

If i try to run Windows in full mode i get the blue screen, so i can only run it in safe mode (but it won't run due to lack of memory). Ya i never used WMP for burning either, i use Nero on my own computer.

Best option if you have a computer external from this is to remove the HD with the images and run it as a slave drive on your other computer.... If thats an option thats what I would do.
