"Item Not Found" when Moving or Renaming

Every time I move or rename a folder, an "Item Not Found" dialog opens. It says "Could not find this item. This is no longer located in C:\...". When I click "Try Again", it moves/renames just fine.

Does anyone know why it's happening and how I can make it stop? It's incredibly annoying.

Have you checked to see if your antivirus program is scanning the folder when you first try to access it, thereby locking the folder and preventing any changes to it?

Try selecting the folder and waiting a few seconds - if that doesn't work try waiting up to a minute. If that does not have an effect, try disabling the live scanning feature temporarily and see if it makes a difference.

What I have noticed recently is that Windows 7 takes its sweet time refreshing any new file or folder names if they are changed or just added. I've taken to pressing F5 after any change like that before touching anything else to avoid those silly "Item Not Found" errors. XP and Vista don't do that! I don't remember this always happening with Windows 7. It's only been happening for the last few weeks, that I remember. It might have been one of those Microsoft Updates we get on Patch Tuesday every week. Maybe it's a virus from Apple.

    Bye.

It's good to know I'm not alone, Crunchy Doodle. I really hope there's a solution on the horizon, it's driving me a bit mad.

As for the antivirus hypothesis, johngalt, I'm afraid I don't have one.

    Any other ideas?

I had the same issue - possible solution

A while back I used a program called "remove-libraries" to remove the annoying library icon form the desktop. Recently Windows 7 preformed an update and the library icon was back and I started to get the error message, "Item not found" when I tried to rename a file. I would click "Try Again" and the file will be renamed. I re-ran the remove-libraries program and now I don't have the error message anymore.
    Hope this helps.

I think you're on to something. I did that registry hack too, and I remember Libraries briefly showing back up after a recent update, though it seems to have gone away again on it's own. But it was right around then that this started happening.

Was it the remove-libraries.reg from this page that you used? I'll try it out...

Problem solved! Thanks so much, mov3nforward!

For others who had an update botch their reg hack, add remove-libraries.reg to your registry and restart. This is what's inside:
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{2112AB0A-C86A-4ffe-A368-0DE96E47012E}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{491E922F-5643-4af4-A7EB-4E7A138D8174}]
