How to prevent Esc key from deleting input

Doesn't seem to happen here, but on some other forums, when I enter data into a message box (composing a forum response) using IE7 or IE8, if I press the Esc key, all data in the Message box is wiped out. Ctrl+Z brings it back but it can be very disconcerting to say the least.

Questions:

Why doesn't it happen here?
How can I prevent it happening elsewhere (whatthetech.com for instance).
