Did you make any significant changes to your computer just before your sidebar stopped working properly? If so, I'd vote for a system restore. Then you can download the sidebar again from Personalization Gallery - Windows 7 themes, wallpapers, and gadgets - Microsoft Windows.

in the time you've been disregarding our advice on a system restore you could have it done, and have that software reinstalled....

but regardless, i would suggest that you go through your gadgets (in C:\Users\<your username>\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets and find the one you just installed and delete it, that might solve it

edit: forgot to mention, you will need to show hidden files and folders first, to do this press alt in a windows explorer window, then go tools>folder options click the view tab then select show hidden files and folders (NOT show protected Operating System files)
