    Thanks Steve.
I loaded this utility and sure enough after going into the settings I've now got an icon again of the '2 tv's' in the systray. Neat!! I'm being very "picky" , but shame that no globe appears as well. Perhaps that's not really important, but before when the globe didn't appear this usually meant that my PC was not fully connected to the Web and you knew there was a problem. Is ther anyway of telling when this is happening from this new icon's settings?
A good workaround if the problem has been exhausted, but I'm still dying to know how to get the original icon back.
BTW thanks for all the welcome's to the forum....really nice touch and very helpful squad here!!

You get the original back by going to an Ethernet connection rather than a wireless connection. That little bar graph is your wireless icon. It is the strength meter.

Just got my mains lead in on time.

I definitely (well 99%) had the other icon showing on my new PC. I've had it about a month now and it was only today that I noticed it missing for the first time, hence my posting. I do have senior moments sometimes (I'm leaving myself very open here and I'm not telling my age....LOL) and you are making me think that this might be another, as more than one person has said that they don't have the icon in W7. Do you know for a fact that W7 doesn't display the 2 tv's and globe icon in the systray? If so I'll say no more and head to bed!!!
    Cheers and thanks again

My wife has a wireless PC, but it runs Vista not W7 and her PC has the missing icon and also the graph for the network connection. So has this changed since since Vista?

Here's what the icon looks like for a wired connection.

I never ran Vista; but it has changed since XP. My wife still runs XP. At first, that new icon threw me, too. So don't feel bad.

Very diplomatic CarlTR6, thanks. So unless there are any other offers, I shall concede defeat and get to bed. At least I got the 2 tv icon from one of the above posts, so it hasn't been a complete waste of time.

Thanks for posting those, Derek. I had never seen the wired icon in 7.
