Windows 7: Application auto start up

Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Application auto start up

In Windows 7 Pro 64-bit I use an image viewer/ingester called Photo Mechanic. This is compatable with 64-bit but is loaded as a 32-bit applicationand it runs well.

When an SD card is inserted into my Belkin USB card reader the application is set to open as I have associated the image file extension (NEF) with Photo Mechanic.

The problem is that sometimes it opens and other times nothing happens unless I manually open it.

I'm also running Virtual XP and I note that my card reader is always "shared" if integration is on. If I switch integration off and insert the SD card then Windows 7 reports "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this actiopn. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel" I already have associated the NEF files with Photo Mechanic but sometimes it still will not open. The image files are not in the root of the SD card but in a folder and sub folder. I do not see any way of associating a folder to a program.

Maybe others have similar situations even if not photo programs that might shed some light on this problem?
