"Date Modified" changes on original file when copying

    I have never seen or noticed original file properties to change in any version of Windows when it's copied. I've now "played" about 15 minutes with this, trying to replicate this. No luck.

    Right mouse button drag and drop, selecting Copy here or Create shortcut here > original file or folder properties including time stamp are not changed.

    CTRL + C copy, CTRL + V paste > original file or folder properties including time stamp are not changed.

    Context menu Copy - Paste > original file or folder properties including time stamp are not changed.

    Am I missing something here?

    You were not able to recreate the issue because it really appears when we Move or Copy across different DRIVES/ PARTITIONS. Then the Created and Modified Dates change.

    As per my observation the MODIFIED DATE stays, CREATED date changes.

    Only when I COPY with TERACOPY do the CREATED DATES remain.
    ROBOCOPY also has the ability but I am checking it as we speak.

    Please check this..

    COPY some older FOLDERS & FILES that have CREATED & MODIFIED DATES of last year or so. (The columns / fields have to be made visible in explorer if not already)

    COPY them to an External USB HDD or so.

    Report back with results.

    If you are able to find both C & M dates are MAINTAINED, then please post your
    Windows OS Details. (i.e. XP / Win 7 / Ultimate/ Pro / x32 / x64)
    (Assuming you are not using another Copy/File Tool or CopyHandler)

    Like I said, all data is maintained, Modified timestamps remain. Done with Windows Explorer.

    Maybe my XP is bugging out and not able to do this. Let me check if my Win7 x64 also keeps the CREATED DATES.

    Nice article helps quite a bit. But, it still doesn't talk about Copy / Move operations across different DRIVES / PARTITIONS, esp. NTFS > NTFS.

    In my experience, and as UsernameIssues above shows, when you copy a file to a new partition or drive, the created time will update to the current time it was copied but the file modification time remains unchanged. If you move the file, it retains the creation and modification times. In both cases, last accessed times are updated to the time it was moved/copied.

    What a charming discussion about an obscure, and mostly ignored topic. The term "Date" in Windows is even more complicated than previously described. There is in addition to "Date Modified", and "Date created", there is also just a "Date". (plus date accessed, archived, saved,...)

    If you are having a slow afternoon, and like Windows puzzles, try this. In the Contents pane of a folder in Windows Explorer, Right click a blank area, which gives a context menu, dependent on... what, Folder "type" maybe? (I really hate folder "types". It is so Apple-like to have the computer arbitrarily decide for me, like I am too stupid to assign folder types when I want them.) But never mind, R-C gives a context menu.

    Menu type one -- Sort choices include "Date" (Name, Date, Type, Size, Tags) other folders will have Menu type two -- Sort choices include "Date modified" (Name, Date modified, Type, Size) There are also other menus for folders containing mostly music and video.

    Virtually all varieties of Sort, (that I have tried) leaves sub-folders before mere files--Except with Date Modified, Descending--here files come before folder. This was really irritating. If you sort by "Date Modified" "Ascending", Folders come before files. But Date Modified, Descending, Files come first.

    The "More..." choice at the bottom of the "Sort-by" list, allows adding choices to that menu. So, I added a "Date" choice.

    If you sort by "Date" "Descending" then all sub-folders are at the top of the list, Files at the bottom. (everywhere I tried). Changing to Ascending, keeps the folders at top of the list.

    I am nearly always interested in Descending, to keep my recent work at the top of the list. But I want my folders first. So, I am adding Sort by "Date" to all my folders. Hope this is not something that will crash like the feature (XP, or Vista?) that limited the number of folders where you could create a custom layout.

    And I still dont know where the "Date" value really comes from. Seems equal to either Date created or Date modified, but the fun is wearing thin.
